    Rooting in Water

    • 1). Wash the glass in which you will be rooting the tip thoroughly, as well as any surfaces with which it may come in contact. Fill the glass with room-temperature water.

    • 2). Remove any bottom leaves from the cutting and put it in the glass. Place the cutting in a location where there is bright, indirect light, such as a window with northern exposure or under a grow light. Make sure there are no sources of heat, or wind, nearby.

    • 3). Keep the water fresh and clean, making sure it is aerated. When the tip cutting has a root system that is about 1 inch long, it is ready for potting.

    Rooting in Growth Medium

    • 1). Wash a terra cotta pot thoroughly as well as your trowel and any surfaces before handling the cutting. Fill the pot with growth medium. Dip the bottom 1 to 1 1/2 inches of the cutting in a packet of rooting hormone and gently tap off any excess hormone.

    • 2). Press the eraser end of the pencil about 1 1/2 inches into the growth medium and place the cut end into the depression. Gently pat the medium around the cutting to keep it in place. Bend the wire into a U-shape that is large enough to place over the cutting when inserted into the medium.

    • 3). Water the soil thoroughly to ensure that the medium is fully drenched. Cover the cutting with the plastic bag, making sure the top of it rests on the wire and not the cutting itself. Transfer the cutting when it has developed roots that are 1 inch long.
