Advantages of a DVD Player With a Tuner
- Perhaps the biggest advantage of buying a DVD player with a built in tuner is, if the tuner is digital, it can receive digital television signals and display it on an analog television. In June 2009 over-the-air broadcasters shut down their analog signals and switched to digital only, meaning many televisions can no longer receive a signal over the air without equipment that converts the signal. While dedicated converter boxes are available, a DVD player with a built in tuner can reduce the amount of wires plugged into your TV by combining two functions.
- If you're TV is digital ready, having a DVD player with a tuner still gives you the same advantage VCRs with a tuner offered: one remote for watching movies and television. The average American coffee table holds a TV remote, a DVD player remote, an audio remote and sometimes even a VCR remote. Using one device to do two things can cut back on this clutter.
- Have an old computer monitor and some speakers lying around? Get a DVD player with a digital tuner and VGA output and you can turn that old monitor into a full-blown television. This is perfect for college dorm rooms or for cheaply setting up a television in your bedroom.
