Colored contact lenses are a fun alternative to regular contacts, as they allow you to easily change the appearance of your eyes. Although regular contacts are primarily worn by people who want to see more clearly without glasses, colored ones are available to anyone who can safely wear them, whether vision correction is needed or not. Knowing the different types available makes it easy to choose what lens is best for you. - Visibility tinted contacts are a type of lens that has a faint coloring, usually blue or green. Although this type of lens is technically colored, it is not meant to alter the wearer's actual eye color. The purpose of these lenses are to make them easier to insert and remove. In addition, they are designed to be more easily located when dropped than colorless contacts, which often blend into the background, making them difficult to locate.
- Enhancement tint contact lenses have a translucent tint that, unlike visibility tinted lenses, slightly changes the color of the eyes. Although they cannot completely alter eye color, they are meant to enhance the natural color. For example, a woman with blue eyes who wears blue enhancement tinted lenses will increase the intensity of her natural color, making them more blue in appearance. According to All About Vision, this works well for people with light eyes.
- These are deeply pigmented, opaque contacts that completely alter the color and appearance of your eyes. These types of lenses come in a number of different colors, such as gray, lavender, blue and green. The center of the lenses are uncolored so that you can easily see out of them. This type of lens is required for changing the color of dark eyes.
- Costume contacts are dramatic in nature, and are meant to change not only the color, but the overall appearance of your eyes. For example, these types of lenses can make your eyes appear cat-like, alien or completely white. They are not generally worn on a daily basis but are popular in the movie industry and during occasions when costumes are worn such, as on Halloween.
- Designed specifically for sports and athletes, these types of contacts are tinted to enhance or mute certain colors. For example, according to WebMD, a yellow-filtering tint would make a tennis ball stand out for tennis players.
