What is Regifting and How Does it Work

103 9
A subject of interest that was recently presented on TV has been coined "regifting".
What this implies in easy to understand terms is getting rid of something you got from another person, don't want and/or can't use.
Tacky idea? Why? In days gone by there was an elaborate protocol established around "Aunt Mabel's doilies".
Hideous, yes, but we had to keep them forever and remember to put them out when she visited.
The days of the relentless crochet enthusiast may be behind us but we still get gifts that won't work for one reason or another.
What to do? Well, one idea is to mark them with a sticky note to remind us of who they came from and put them away until next year.
(Tacky is giving them back to the same person.
) When we buy for others we often aren't sure we have made the perfect selection or even a passable one.
It's often a hit or miss proposition.
Isn't it pretty easy to get that they are in the same situation? How many times have you opened a gift and immediately had that puzzled look on your face? You know, the one that says, "Whatever made her think this would work for me?" Well, now it has a place in your home and life.
It goes onto the "regifting" shelf...
thank you notes not withstanding.
The "white elephant", to use an ancient but very apt term, may even rest there for more than a year, but the day will come when it will fill the bill nicely.
Is this concept one that might work for you? Can you allow yourself room for some options beyond the emotional attachment you have to the person who gave you the gift? Can you consider the possibility that finding a home for the item in question that you definitely aren't going to use might even be fun? Yes? Atta girl! This concept does not apply to the overtly visible.
You may have to wear that scarf if it came from someone you see often.
If it came from across the country, regift it.
Or you may be able to put it away in mothballs until you "get an outfit that goes with it".
What this premise offers is to have a much smaller mothball drawer.
The point here is to think the whole thing through and allow for some latitude on how you deal with the unwanted or usable items that inevitably come your way.
Putting them away someplace where no one is ever going to see them lacks practicality.
Why not lighten up and share the wealth? It may tickle the next person pink!
