Is Hay Fever Similar to Other Diseases?
- The U.S. National Library of Medicine cites symptoms of hay fever that include sneezing, tearing of the eyes, runny or stuffy nose and itchiness that may involve the mouth, nose, throat, eyes or skin.
- The U.S. National Library of Medicine lists other forms of allergic rhinitis with symptoms similar or identical to those found in hay fever. These include allergies to mold, dust and pet dander (dried skin).
- Individuals with a runny or stuffy nose may also have a syndrome called nonallergic rhinitis, notes the Mayo Clinic. This condition results from an abnormal expansion of blood vessels inside the nose.
- The Mayo Clinic cites causes of nonallergic rhinitis that include weather changes, infections, stress, alcohol use, several classes of medications and environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke, perfumes, smog and chemical exposure.
- Individuals with nonallergic rhinitis do not typically experience the itchiness associated with hay fever, according to the Mayo Clinic.
