Austin Eye Surgery For Cataracts

105 30
Cataracts are one of the common problem that many of the people aro8und the world are facing today, however it is important to undergo eye surgery to solve this problem.

Cataracts are not always a result of ageing. Children may very rarely have cataracts which develop before or after they are born, and these are known as hereditary or developmental cataracts. Young diabetics can also develop cataracts (especially if their blood sugar control is poor) and additionally cataracts may form as a consequence of severe eye injuries or inflammation. Ultraviolet light can produce cataracts, so you must wear appropriate eye protection when using a sunbed. Infra-red light also can cloud the lens and a classic example occurs in glassblowers. If they stare too long and too often at the red, glowing, molten glass that they are shaping, then a cataract may be the consequence. Acquired cataracts of this type usually develop in the lens cortex away from the centre of the lens. However today there is Austin eye surgery and medications for this problem.

Cataracts of Ageing

The cataract of old age is called a nuclear cataract because the cloudiness develops right in the centre of the lens and slowly progresses outwards. As the cloudiness progresses, the centre of the lens hardens and becomes less capable of transmitting light to the retina. At first the cataract will not have a noticeable effect on vision; later on it will become a nuisance and if left too long it will be a major visual handicap. Older people first start to appreciate that they have the ageing or nuclear cataract on sunny days. When it is a bright day the pupil narrows down to restrict the light entering. However, when the pupil narrows, it centres on the very part of the lens which has become opaque. The chemical changes which are associated with nuclear cataract formation are now well known and have been studied in great detail by scientists. Unfortunately what is not so well known is what factors are responsible for cataract formation in the first place. Also on the downside there is no conventional medication which either reverses the cataractous changes in the lens or even halts them. The treatment now, as it has been for thousands of years, is surgery, although there have been many advances since the couching and needling techniques originating in ancient India, which were still used by oculists in the eighteenth century (see chapter 3). All sorts of medical cures have been put forward, unfortunately too many by charlatans and the misinformed, but none has had the blessing of the medical fraternity or does any good at all.

While there is presently no medical cure for cataract, cataract Austin eye surgery is extremely effective for the vast majority of patients to the extent that it is one of the most successful operations available today. Procedures are continually evolving and they have come a long way since the treatment was the despised operation of barber-shop surgeons. The barber-surgeons pushed the lens to one side out of the visual pathway. The operation became progressively more sophisticated but there was an underlying problem. Without a lens the patient has +10D of long sight to cope with; in other words, the patient needs very thick focusing spectacles called cataract glasses to obtain a clear image.
