Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Movie Review Starring Jim Carrey
Ace Ventura (Jim Carrey) has carved himself a nice little investigative niche handling cases that involve pets of all shapes and sizes. As we are introduced to Ace he is rescuing a small dog from an abusive man and returning it to a stunning female who is happy to compensate him for his work. While working on his most recent case looking for a rare bird, Ace receives a call from Melissa Robinson (Courteney Cox) who is the head of Public Relations for the Miami Dolphins. It turns out that someone has kidnapped the Dolphins' mascot Snowflake, just before their Super Bowl game.
Although the investigation is also being worked on by the Lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young) and the police department, Ace thinks he can use his animal expertise to solve the crime. After an extensive and silly search of Snowflake's tank, Ace returns with a tiny stone from a ring that was identified as a Super Bowl ring. This leads Ace and Melissa to the conclusion that the kidnapper must have been part of the 84' Dolphins Super Bowl team.
Ace gets right to work investigating all of the players from that year and using his wild ways to identify which ring is missing the lost stone. He eventually crosses off every player from the 84' team photo only to be informed that Ray Finkle, the kicker who shanked the game winning field goal, was not in the team photo.
Melissa and Ace continue their investigation visiting the Finkle household and meeting his interesting parents. They inform the two that Finkle was institutionalized shortly after missing the game winning field goal. This leads to one of the crazier Jim Carrey moments when he fronts as an insane patient so he can track down Finkle's files at the institution. When he does he finds something interesting that leads Ace and Melissa to Dan Marino who is being help by the guilty party. The ending is the film is hilarious and worth waiting around for but I won't spoil it for those that haven't seen the film.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a very funny movie if you are looking for some easy laughs and a storyline that isn't too serious. This film really was the foundation for the film success that was to follow for Jim Carrey. The movie is a great opportunity to see Courteney Cox prior to his huge success on the TV show Friends.
