DIY Home Air-Conditioning

104 20

    Preparation

    • Gather your tools and materials, including a tape measure, pencil, paper, screwdriver, screws, caulking gun, waterproof caulking, air-conditioner unit, the mounting hardware provided and foam insulation, if required. Turn off the power to your home to prevent any accidents.

Choose the window that you are going to install the air-conditioner in and use the measuring tape to measure the space from the inside of the window frame, because you won't be cutting the frame. Check that your air-conditioner is the right size for the space before proceeding.

    Placement

    • Attach the mounting bracket to the wall using the nuts provided. Install it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Have a friend help you slide the air-conditioner into the opening of the window. Secure the air-conditioner to the mounting brackets. Hold the air-conditioner steady, making sure that it doesn't fall either out or inside of the window.

Check that the window is firmly attached at the mounting bracket and that the bracket is securely attached in all respects before letting go of the air-conditioner. Close the window down on top of the device into the groove if there is one.

    Finishing Up

    • Pull out the extensions on the air-conditioner, which are located on both sides of the device, and attach them to the frame. Seal any portion of space around the device with the provided foam. This includes the unit, the sides and any other area with gaps. Apply caulking over the foam. This adds extra sealant and protection.

Attach the supplied drainage hose, if applicable, to the exterior of the air-conditioning unit. Turn the power back on. Plug in your air-conditioner and test it to make sure that it works. Install a thermostat if necessary, though some machines come with a regulator already designed into them. If you do want a thermostat, connect it to the air handler on the unit and to the main power supply, but do so before you turn the power back on to test the air-conditioner. Once it is installed, turn the power on again. Set it and test both the device and the thermostat to ensure that they both work correctly.
