Benefits vs Disadvantages of working on Cruise ships

So your thinking of choosing a career based on a cruise ship? By human nature, you would consider the positives and negatives, and that's okay but at the end of the day there aren't many other jobs that could possibly provide you with as many perks as working onboard would. Don't get me wrong, I believe that if work isn't hard, it's a hobby. Things might be challenging some times, but never this exciting. Some would however feel that it's better to weigh the facts, so listed below are the benefits and disadvantages of this specific career to assist and inform you in making the right decision.

Disadvantages:

- Food and beverages:

When having a meal onboard it might not always be variety you see the upper class travellers feast on and it's because that would be impossible to cater every employee with the best they have to provide. The food they will however serve wont lack in hygiene or nutrition but perhaps in variety. Luckily you can always eat out on land and have the experience of tasting different dishes from across the seas.

- Distance from land:

Yes, you will sometimes find it hard to stay away from friends and family for a long period of time and sometimes you might get lonely but various ships have the necessary perks to stay in contact like long distance phone calls and access to E-mail.

- Housing quarters:

The cabin where you stay might be cramped and smaller than you expected and you do not always know with who you might be sharing your room with. Not knowing the other person might be challenging at first but as you go along, you will get to know them and grow more comfortable. - And if you don't, you most probably will be assigned another room or roommate on the next trip.

- Hours and wages:

Life onboard can be energy draining. Sometimes hours are extended because a lack of staff or its expected that you stay onboard ( even when not working) in case you are needed.

Benefits:

- Meeting new people:

If you are lucky enough to get hired by a cruise ship, you become a part of a crew. Not only will these people perhaps grow to be your closest friends, but you are accepted in to a family and a new way of life. Approximately 2,000 to 5,000 passengers pass through the decks which gives you an opportunity to practice your social skills, build up on contacts and leaves you with a broader understanding about cultures and people around the world.

- Experience boosted career:

No matter how long you work on the cruise ships for, it's very seldom that employers receive a Curriculum Vitae with experience of working on deck listed as a previous job, it leaves them with respect and you with an advantage above the other CV's piled on their desks.

- Financial success:

When working on a cruise ship, most of the time you do not have the normal expenses such as rent, groceries, water and electricity which creates the opportunity to save so much more money. Also, because you are in control of your salary and travelling, you can decide how and when to spend your money.

- The lifestyle:

The average person's day will consist of waking up in the morning, perhaps working out, going to work, come home from work, attend to household duties and perhaps turn on the television for that new movie that they have been dying to see. That does not have to be you, you don't have to be average. Life on deck is a big change, but who can look out their window and see masses of ocean and smiling travellers. Who can say that as soon as they get some time off, or on land they go to some of the most exotic or unique locations some are lucky to see. You CAN - and that's the beauty of life onboard.
