- Minoxidil - This drug is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat hair loss in men and women.
It is applied to the scalp twice a day and helps to allow the hair follicles to continue to produce hair shaft material. - Oral Contraceptives - Often times the pattern baldness is caused by a derivative of the male hormone testosterone.
This hormone is actually found in both men and women and when it is metabolized it creates another hormone known as DHT which bonds with the hair follicles causing them to stop hair production.
The estrogen in oral contraceptives can dilute the effects of the testosterone and DHT. - Hair Restoration Surgery - This has been a popular treatment for male pattern baldness for over 50 years.
Since women tend to have thinning hair as opposed to actual bald spots it has not been used much for them.
A new technique, though, called follicular unit extraction now allows hair follicles form other areas of the body besides the head to be used as fillers in the thinning area.
This procedure has opened up a new avenue for the treatment of female hair loss.
