Common Eye Problems

101 19
Before considering a treatment method, it is important that you familiarize yourself with what eye problem is preventing you from seeing properly. Visiting an eye doctor will help you determine the cause and appropriate treatment for the problem.

Nearsightedness

This refers to difficulty seeing objects at a distance. As the name implies, you can see objects clearly that are close to you, but far objects may appear more blurry. Nearsightedness is also termed as shortsightedness or myopia.

Nearsightedness occurs because the eyeball is too long or the cornea is steeper than normal. This causes light to bend at more acute angles, thus allowing light to focus before the retina.

Nearsightedness can be easily treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery (LASIK).

Farsightedness

Farsightedness is also called longsightedness or hyperopia. Farsightedness allows a person to see objects at a distance more clearly than objects nearby.

Farsightedness occurs when the cornea is flatter than normal causing light to bend at more obtuse angles. This will result in light being focused behind the retina.

Farsightedness can be treated with contact lenses, eyeglasses or LASIK surgery.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a visual condition that affects a person's eyesight at all distances, whether near or far. It can be an inherited condition, which normally occurs as a result of a distorted shape in the lens or cornea of the eye. Astigmatism is a condition that worsens as a person grows older.

A person with astigmatism may have frequent headaches along with clouded or blurred vision. Astigmatism may accompany nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Astigmatism may occur due to the irregular shape of the eyeball. Since the eyeball will have a steeper side and a flatter side in the shorter and longer region respectively, light will get focused at random regions. This is why astigmatism is not affected by distance.

Astigmatism can be corrected with eye glasses, soft contacts and refractive surgery, which involves removing layers of the cornea to correct its shape.

Glaucoma

This occurs due to excessive intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is considered to be one of the leading causes of blindness in the whole world.

If the condition is not treated promptly, the optic nerve will get damaged resulting in gradual vision loss. The condition can be treated with prescription eye drops intended to reduce the intraocular pressure in glaucoma.

Surgery may be required in some cases as well.

Glaucoma does not cause many obvious symptoms that may be easily connected to your vision, therefore, regular eye checkups is necessary to identify the condition during its early stages.

Eye strain

Eye strain is a condition that results from the excessive focusing and repetitive motion of the eyes. Eyestrain is characterized by the tiredness a person feels in his eyes, causing him to work less optimally.

Eyestrain may cause the eyes to feel sore, appear red or watery and may also cause impaired focusing ability, lack of concentration and alertness, sleepiness, headaches and back and neck ache.

To treat eyestrain, one may follow appropriate relaxation techniques, take regular eye breaks and readjust his environment so that the eyes feel more relaxed. It is also important to adjust the computer brightness, font size, chair position, glare and lighting. Eye exercises and eye breaks are also beneficial for people who suffer from recurring eye strain.

Computer vision syndrome

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a common eye problem resulting of the excessive usage of the computer. CVS involves many eye problems that may affect your work efforts, if left untreated. A person with CVS may have blurred vision, dual vision, red or dry eyes, sore eyes and back and neck pain.

CVS can be treated with corrective lenses designed for computer work. Moreover, you must also adjust the screen brightness of your computer, contrast, font size, glare and also the lighting of your room.
