Tips For Being Able to Avoid Substance Abuse Relapse

Getting clean and sober is a major change in a person's life and it is much easier to stay clean and sober than it is to get sober again.
So, doing everything you can to protect your sobriety should be a priority, if you are person with a substance abuse problem that is in recovery.
There are things you can do that will help in your quest to stay drug and alcohol free.
1.
Avoid as much as humanly possible the people, places and things that you associate with your addiction.
If you used to buy drugs on a certain street, do not go down that street.
Even if you have to go 10 miles out of your way to get where you are going, it will be worth it.
Take some time to think about exactly what and whom you associate with your addiction.
Unfortunately, you may not recognize some of these people, places and things until you are faced with them.
These things are often referred to as triggers and will stir up some very powerful emotions in many cases.

Making healthy choices and taking care of yourself will keep you strong and help you avoid temptations.
There is an acronym referred to as HALT.
As long as you can avoid these things, you stand a very good chance of avoiding relapse and staying strong.
HALT stands for hungry, angry, lonely and tired.
Even a person that is not an addict should avoid things that lead to these feelings.

Having a strong support system is invaluable when you are a recovering addict.
It is important to go to 12-step meetings, get a sponsor, journal about your thoughts and feelings and work the steps.
This is all part of the recovery process and the farther you get into it and the stronger your support system is, the less likely you are not to be able to handle temptation when you are faced without.
Like many other things in life, recovery is a process and it takes time.
Avoiding relapse is very important.
Addiction is a disease and just because you stop using does not mean that it goes away.
When you relapse, there is no guarantee that you will make it back into recovery.
Avoiding relapse has to be a priority.
