    Stop Mail Online

    • 1). Visit the United States Postal Service website to place your mail on hold. Locate the section titled "Products and Services," and click on the box marked "Receiving Mail." Scroll down and click on "Put Mail on Hold." The online mail-hold service is limited to certain areas of the country -- enter your zip code to find out if yours is included.

    • 2). Enter your five-digit zip code in the box provided, and click "Go." The online hold-mail application notifies your post office electronically to hold your mail. Your request must be received online by 2 a.m. to begin holding mail the same day. You may submit your hold mail request up to two weeks prior to the date you want your mail hold to begin.

    • 3). Enter your first name, last name, address and phone number. Read the terms and conditions, and click "Continue." Select the date you want to begin holding your mail and the date you want your mail delivery service to resume. Choose whether or not you want your accumulated mail delivered to your home or if you will pick it up from the post office upon your return. Enter any additional information you want your post office to have, and submit your application.

Visit your local post office location to obtain the required form you must fill out to hold your mail. Most post offices display this form in the office for you to take at your convenience. If you cannot find this form, just ask a post office employee to find one for you.

    • 2). Enter your name, address, the date you want to stop your mail delivery and the date you want to resume your mail delivery. Choose to either pick up your mail upon your return or to have it all delivered to your home on the specified date. Sign the form.

    • 3). Give your mail-hold request form to a postal employee or leave it in your mailbox with the flag up. Your mail carrier will take the form to the post office on your behalf.
