Proper Disposal of Light Bulbs
- There are a number of disposal options at your fingertips. First, check out www.earth911.org. Earth911 can locate a recycling location in your area by typing in your ZIP code. Note: certain stores, like IKEA, take back used CFL bulbs. If a recycling station is not an option, then contact your local waste-management agency for information on community disposal guidelines and options. Generally, local waste-management agencies have household hazardous waste collection programs in which materials, like light bulbs, are picked up from local residences. There may or may not be a small fee for the service, and collection schedules vary.
- After a disposal option is chosen, place used bulbs in a structurally sound container. This will help avoid breakage, leakage and spillage of hazardous components. The bulb's original container or any box will do. Close and securely seal the box with tape. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)recommends three-inch PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic insulating tape. Label the box or container, clearly indicating its contents. For example: "Used Bulbs" or "Bulbs for Disposal." Place the sealed, labeled container in a dry area and store it in a way that avoids damage. Following these steps will allow for easier and safer transportation.
