Visit the capital of Ladakh called Leh. Among the attractions here is the famous Leh palace. In the present times, this is in the ruined condition but was constructed on the pattern of Potala palace, a very beautiful palace constructed in Tibet. There is a heritage associated with Leh and this was part of Indus valley trade route in the past. In the present times, this place is famous for the monasteries and monuments. His holiness, the Dalai Lama put the relics of Buddha at the Shanti stupa himself. From the Shanti stupa, one can have the panoramic views. In the evenings, it is an awesome beauty. There are various sculptures in the stupa pointing to various phenomenons that took place in the life of Lord Buddha. The monastery of Hemis was constructed in the seventeenth century and from here, one can go to the Hemis national park, the environmental reserve famous for the snow leopard. There is another monastery called the Stok monastery. In this monastery, one can find the volumes of precious scriptures and various other books of knowledge.
THIKSE MONASTERY
The visit to Ladakh will be incomplete without going to the Thiksey monastery. This is the monastery based on the Tibetan Buddhist styles of architecture. This monastery is a big structure located in Central Ladakh. On seeing the monastery, one reminds of Potala palace. Also called small Potala, one can find the sculpture of the Tibetan protective deity at the entrance. The three colors used in the monastery are white, red and ochre. The Maitriya Buddha is also called the future Buddha. In this monastery, one can see this Buddha in lotus position. The assembly hall in the monastery has a wheel of life. The message of the Bhavchakra or the wheel of life is the final detachment of the earthly ties for the purpose of enlightenment. One can see the temple dedicated to goddess Tara. In this temple, there are twenty one images.
Festivals associated with the Thikse monastery
The festival of Gustor is an important festival in this monastery. One can see the series of dances during the event like the famous Mask dance or the Cham dance. Being here during the dance festival is a special experience. The monks look wonderful in the beautiful red robes. In the Cham dance, there is use of Tibetan instruments. During the Cham dance, one sees highlights of life of Padmasambhava.
