Skin Reactions

• Common skin reactions to amoxicillin in the elderly are skin conditions such as rash, itching and even hives. In the event of an allergic reaction to the drug, an individual may experience intense itching, hives and swelling of the eyelids, lips, tongue and fingers. Such reactions should be immediately assessed by emergency personnel, as swelling may prompt swelling of the airways, which interfere with breathing.
  
  

Mental Distress

• Many seniors react to amoxicillin with anxiety and even behavioral changes. Confusion is also common. Some individuals experience dizziness and even some insomnia. These symptoms are caused by increased levels of the drug that the kidneys are unable to filter.
  
  

Digestive Issues

• Nausea, diarrhea and upset stomach are common side effects for the elderly. Patients are encouraged to take medication at mealtimes to decrease chance of nausea. Some individuals experience watery or severe bouts of diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration so make sure adequate intake of fluids happens.
  
  

Fatigue

• Many seniors may notice an increased sense of fatigue or lethargy when taking amoxicillin. Unusual weakness or fatigue but symptoms may vary depending on general health, medical condition, age and normal physical activity levels.
  
  

Administration

• Take amoxicillin according to prescribed instructions. Patients are encouraged to take all pills, even if symptoms for which the antibiotic has been prescribed are relieved prior to course completion.
