In the United States, more than 66,000 people work in the field of veterinary medicine. They serve patients in a wide range of applications including agriculture, public health, research and other specialized fields. South Dakota State University has an established veterinary science program offering bachelor's degrees in microbiology, biology, animal science and dairy science. South Dakota State offers several scholarships to students in its Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program, including the Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship. - Students applying for the Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship must be enrolled in the Veterinary Science Department and the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program at South Dakota State University. Students of all classes, including incoming freshmen, can apply for this scholarship.
- Aside from basic departmental requirements for scholarship applicants, students must also meet specific requirements to apply for the Lewis Scholarship. Students must demonstrate academic excellence, involvement in activities related to animals and a strong interest in the profession of veterinary medicine. The Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Science Department will review each applicant and determine a recipient. The scholarship is awarded annually.
- To be considered for the Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship, applicants must submit two applications. The first application, to the College of Agricultural and Biological Sciences, can be found online at the college's website. Prospective recipients must also submit the Veterinary Science Departmental supplemental application to the chair of the Veterinary Science Departmental Scholarship committee via email. The chair can change from year to year, so check the department's website to verify who holds the position.
