Magic of the Fountain

103 73
In ancient times, waterfalls, springs and water sources in general were believed to hold magical healing powers.
Such places were thought to be the homes of the gods.
The Greeks tried hard to replicate waterfalls and springs by building floor standing fountains fountains, which they adorned with figurines depicting their favorite god or goddess.
The word fountain comes from the Latin "Fons" which means "the source".
In ancient roman mythology, Fontus, the son of Juturna and Janus, was the god of wells and springs.
Interestingly, Janus is one of the few roman gods who does not have a Greek counterpart.
It was the Romans who captured the power of water, in its use as a medium for mechanics (Nero's revolving dining hall was powered by water) and in its supposed medicinal powers.
Those closest to a moving source of water enjoyed better health than those who did not.
The Romans developed some of the most beautiful water fountains in the world.
Many times, they captured the natural source of water and created gushing fountains with pressure.
In later years, during the early European renaissance (rebirth), when new technologies were being discovered such as the spinning wheel, the windmill, the magnetic compass and the astrolabe, the building of water fountains was in decline, in favour of wells.
The resurgence of water fountains occurred during the second renaissance and its artistic and cultural movement.
Water fountains suddenly became objects to adore and adorn.
Some of the most complicated fountains were built during this period.
Over the years and moving into modern history, fountains continued to be a source not only of water but also of inspiration and a monument to wealth, fortune and power.
It seemed the larger the fountain, the more powerful and influential the owner was.
Great floor mounted water fountains can be seen in many plazas, historic buildings, and places of importance as well as parks.
Today, floor mounted water fountains adorn shopping malls, residential courtyards, businesses and even private homes.
Now, even smaller homes are using floor standing water fountains in their décor in the home and in the garden.
This is not for any egotistic reasons but purely for aesthetics and health reasons.
Normal home owners like you and I are installing floor standing fountains in our homes because they capture the beauty of the renaissance and modern designs in glass and copper are in great demand.
There is also the health factors the Greeks knew about so long ago.
The action of water movement from the fountains produces negative ions which combat allergens in the air.
The Greeks knew it, the Romans knew it and now we finally realize the importance of water fountains.
Floor mounted fountains are very beneficial.
Air circulates around them; they capture the bad allergens from the air leaving only purer air to continue circulating.
Even plants in close proximity grow greener and more lush.
Floor mounted fountains are now readily available from specialty stores that will be a great addition to your home or garden.
Plan for one now and enjoy the magic of the fountain.
