What Should Good Animations Have?

104 34

    Artistic Shot Composition

    • With a visual medium, the shots seen on screen are the initial elements a viewer notices in an animation. Each shot consists of a number of separate elements combined together to create its final look. These include the animated characters/actors, props and sets, backgrounds, lighting and special effects. As in photography, the artistic composition, colors, lighting and overall mood and feel each shot exudes create varying forms of aesthetic interpretation for each viewer. To create the best composition for each shot, make a storyboard prior to starting with the actual animation.

    Smooth Flow of Movement

    • How the images move on screen greatly affects the overall quality of the animation. If the movements look too rough and jumpy, unless it is a justifiable treatment of what the story and visual requirements of the movie need, the viewers feel there is something wrong, or something looks technically unpolished in the animation they are watching.

Physical motion is an essential quality that can make or break an animation project. Movements should show a character's internal thoughts and feelings. Even moving props and sets should add meaning to what is happening in the story. The movements for both living and nonliving things on screen should look believable. Since animated characters replace what live actors do in a movie, their images should demonstrate a strong sense of acting.

    Seamless Compositing Work

    • In animation, compositing refers to the combining of the various visual elements done separately during the production, like the animated characters, sets, props and backgrounds, to create the final look of each shot. These elements may or may not be moving at any given time, but how they look together should always be seamless on screen.

If an animation is not composited well, there are times that the moving character's background looks weird because it doesn't match the speed and direction of the character's movements. Compositing work requires accuracy in every visual element's size and dimension at any given time during the animation.

    Effective Storytelling

    • Storytelling is the soul of any movie. No matter how first-rate the technical aspect of an animation is, if the story doesn't work, the movie is still a failure. In fact, for movies with really good storytelling, some of their technical limitations may be overlooked as long as the story really captures the audience's interest and emotions. Some movies look great, but they don't tell good stories. Some low-budget movies may not look as great as other big-budget releases with how they use topnotch special effects, but they still tell engaging and touching stories.

Effective storytelling starts with a good script for the animation. The choice of shots and how the characters are able to delight and involve the viewers are important in storytelling. How the plot progresses and how the story develops are always crucial in making a successful movie.
