DIY: Trimming Garage Windows

    • 1). Measure the top span of the window opening, from corner to corner, using a tape measure.

    • 2). Mark out the measurement on a piece of window trim, using a pencil. Don't measure from the end of the trim, but rather put a mark about 6 inches in from one end, then measure from that mark to make the second mark.

    • 3). Set the trim on a miter saw, faceup, with the bottom edge of the trim facing the back of the saw platform. Set one of the marks in front of the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees outward, away from the measured section of the trim. Cut the trim.

    • 4). Move the trim so the second mark is in front of the saw blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees in the opposite direction. Make the second cut.

    • 5). Position the trim along the top of the window opening so the lower edge of the trim lines up with the upper edge of the opening. The angle cuts at the corners should rise up and out over the opening. Nail the trim in place with your hammer and trim nails.

    • 6). Measure, cut and install the other three pieces of trim in the same way, to border the other three sides of the window opening. The angled cuts should butt against each other to form the 90-degree corners of the frame.

    • 7). Caulk around the trim. Run a thin, smooth bead along each edge of each side.
