    Pecan

    • The pecan tree has a thick, light-to-dark reddish brown bark and can grow to be up to 100 feet high. It has a slow to moderate growth rate---taking several years to mature. In good soils, pecans grow effectively and create a large amount of shade due to the density of their leaves; they also produce edible nuts commonly eaten by many people. Pecan trees do not grow well where there is no top soil.

    Live Oak

    • Live oak trees are thought of by many as one of the most beautiful trees in Texas. They typically have several large branches and can grow to be 40 to 60 feet tall. The tree has a very dark and furrowed bark and grows at a slow to moderate rate---taking many years to reach maturity. Live oaks adjust well to urban situations and can tolerate poor soil conditions. Some corrective pruning can be advantageous for young trees.

    Desert Willow

    • The desert willow has smooth brown bark on young trees, which turns dark brownish-black with age. The slender tree can reach a height of 30 feet when fully grown and has a rapid growth rate. Desert willow wood is sometimes used for making fence posts; many baskets are also made from its twigs.

    Red Oak

    • The red oak is a large, ornamental tree that has moderately stout, reddish bark that becomes grayish brown as the tree ages. Its height can be in the range of 40 to 80 feet. The red oak can tolerate city conditions and shows rapid growth in fertile soil.

    Wright Acacia

    • Wright acacia---also called Wright catclaw---has a gray-brown bark that becomes dark as the tree ages. It is usually less than 30 feet in height and is considered a relatively small tree when compared to other Texas trees.
