What is a Texas SR22?
In addition to certifying liability insurance that at least meets the Texas minimum requirement; the carrier also must notify the Texas Department of Public Safety if there is a lapse in coverage.
The most common reasons someone is required to have an SR-22 filing include:
- Alcohol related license suspension
- Drug Offenses
- Driving without insurance
- Driving while suspended
- An uninsured crash
If you already have an auto insurance policy, the simplest way to get an SR-22 form could be with your current company.
They may be willing to add the SR-22 filing to your policy for a small additional fee.
However some insurance company's will not accept customers that need a SR-22.
If that is the case, or if you don't currently have auto insurance, you will need to shop for an insurance carrier that offers an SR-22.
The cost of this type of policy is not necessarily much higher than a regular auto policy.
However your driving record will be a factor for the cost.
If you have a suspended license you will need to contact the DMV to see what is required for reinstatement.
This will normally include showing the SR-22, and paying a reinstatement fee to the DMV.
In some cases you may be required to also complete an education program.
After your license is reinstated be careful not to let your insurance lapse.
That would cause a suspension and you would need to redo the process and pay another reinstatement fee.
