Rascals And Rogues Receive Such A Surprise

103 16
Listening to a top business women give a talk to top businessmen and entrepreneurs, only yesterday, I was most surprised to hear her refer to those in the business world who offered to help her but were only out to see how they could help themselves.
She spoke of the corrupt motives of many - particularly in the banking world.
This set me thinking - and writing.
Matthew, a tax collector, was sitting at his custom post in Israel, gathering in money for the occupying Roman force when Jesus Christ called him with these simple words, "Follow Me".
The response was immediate and positive.
What is your response? Now, Matthew was not the most popular man in Israel.
Most would keep their distance from him, as tax collectors then were rogues and rascals, but not Jesus, who saw in this man potential, if only it could be properly channelled.
Matthew's circle of friends would be cronnies like himself.
It gets very interesting.
Matthew threw a party for Jesus Christ at his home, inviting all his tax collector colleagues, who were not the most moral men in town, but Matthew wanted his friends to meet Jesus.
This would have shocked the neighbourhood and it did.
News of this party got around and in walked a group of religious leaders who were not at all pleased at Jesus.
You can feel the atmosphere suddenly becoming icy when they asked, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus rescues the situation by explaining, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick.
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance".
Jesus comes to call those who know they are not good enough, and not those who think they are already all right.
How we so need to hear that word 'repentance' mentioned and explained in these present days.
Very few realise how essential it is.
It has to come before faith, and belief, and love, joy, peace! Zacchaeus, another tax collector, was a blatant rogue, and Jesus called him.
His life and lifestyle was totally changed, as he repaid those whom he had fleeced.
For some peculiar reason Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus Christ.
We do not know the exact reason, but something attracted him to this preacher who was stirring up the nation.
He climbed up a tree thinking he could have a quiet private view of Jesus without ever being noticed.
Jesus stopped right beneath that tree and called him down and went on to Zacchaeus's home for tea.
Zacchaeus was so transformed that he made up his mind to give half of possessions to the poor, and where he had taken too much money from a client he was going to pay him back four times what he had stolen.
Imagine Zacchaeus approaching to your door.
O, no, not him again - he will be coming for more.
You open the door and he says - ""I have taken $200 more than I ought to have taken.
Here is $800 in return.
I am sorry for what I did, and I have got to put things right!" That is real conversion.
This is what can happen when a man truly repents on meeting Jesus Christ.
Consider what the conversations would have been like following these various visits which Zacchaeus made.
You don't have to be a rascal to be called by Jesus, but if you know you are a rogue, with a bad reputation, that certainly does not exclude you.
And, you don't have to stop liking your friends either.
Matthew ended up writing a book about Jesus Christ and God published it in the Bible as part of His Word.
The story of Zacchaeus is still doing the rounds and it may have spoken to your heart today.
Never limit what God may want to do with you.
Never be satisfied with second best.
And life with Jesus Christ is so exciting.
