How to Troubleshoot an Outside Nightlight
- 1). Switch off the light and replace the bulb. If the light does not turn on it is most likely the bulb has blown. You will need to purchase the correct replacement bulb for your light from a local hardware store. Take care handling halogen bulbs as natural skin oil can cause the bulb to fail prematurely.
- 2). Check your home's circuit breakers or fuses. Reset the fuse or breaker, if necessary, and switch on the light. Have an electrician examine the circuit if the fuse or breaker repeatedly cuts out.
- 3). Clean and check the surface of the sensor. If your outdoor light is motion activated dust and dirt can build up on the sensor and cause the light to stop working. Wipe down the sensor with a cloth and make sure it is pointing in the right direction. Wind can sometimes blow sensors off target.
- 4). Wash the surface of the solar pane if you have solar-powered lights. Moss and other outdoor dirt can prevent solar panels from absorbing enough light to function.
- 5). Contact an electrician if problems persist with your light. If the previous steps fail to restore your light there may be a larger underlying problem. Electricians will be able to examine the circuits and wiring for faults and advise you on how to prevent the problem recurring in future.
