103 41
Just like our teeth, your dog's teeth need regular dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar build-up.
Neglecting to do so can lead to several dental problems including gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.
So, begin brushing your dogs teeth right away, as a pup.
1st the Oral Exam
  • Lightly place you thumbs on either side of your dog's muzzle and gently stroke downward, feeling for any lumps or abnormalities.
  • Next, lift his lip and look at his teeth.
    Is there tartar present?
  • Now check the gum lines.
Are they a healthy pink or red and swollen?
  • Next, with a very soft touch, stroke the gum lines.
    Does this cause bleeding?
  • And lastly, what about that breath.
    Is it fresh?
Hopefully your oral exam shows no signs of periodontal disease.
If however it does, consult with your veterinarian.
After completing your at-home oral exam it's time to brush.
How to Brush Your Dog's Teeth
  • Begin by using a toothpaste and toothbrush made especially for dogs.
  • Put a small amount of toothpaste on the the tooth brush and let your dog lick some of it first.
  • Next, lift your dog's lip and beginning in the back of the mouth, use back-and-forth strokes, and begin brushing.
Do Not apply too much pressure.
  • The front teeth are the most sensitive - so use extra soft strokes or your index finger on this area.
  • Brush each side of your dog's mouth for about 30 seconds.
  • End each brushing session with lots of praise
Final Tips:
  1. Don't worry about brushing the inner enamel area.
  2. Pick the best time of day for you to brush your dog's teeth and then be consistent in doing so daily.
Remember - Some brushing is better than none at all.
  3. Also, consider buying some dental chews and chew toys which may help clean your dog's teeth and reduce tartar.
