How to Prevent Rust on Slate
- 1). Use copper nails on slate roofing. When you install slate roofing, one of the biggest problems is iron staining from the metal nails. While slate roofing may develop some rust over time, the most obvious issues will derive from rust streaks streaming off the nails. Using copper nails will prevent this issue entirely.
- 2). Make a protective rub for your tiles. In a large kettle, warm one part mineral spirits and one part linseed oil. Do not bring this to a boil. Then add beeswax until the consistency of the liquid is like that of motor oil.
- 3). Polish the slate with the beeswax mixture. While the liquid is still warm (the beeswax will set up when it cools) rub the polish into your slate tiles using a rag. Use circular motions and firm pressure--much as if you were waxing a car. Of course, be careful not to get burned if the rub is warmer than you expect, and reheat the mixture if it cools and starts to set before you are finished.
- 4). Keep the slate as dry as possible. If you are using slate pavers or roofing, then you will not be able to keep it all that dry. However, if you are inside then you can use dehumidifiers to keep moisture out of the air and wipe up spills immediately after they happen.
