Craig Morgan - My Kind of Livin" - Cut by Cut
Craig Morgan recently discussed the songs on his new album, MY KIND OF LIVIN? (Broken Bow Records). Set for release March 8, 2005, the disc was produced by Craig Morgan and Phil O?Donnell.
?That's What I Love About Sunday?
(Adam Dorsey, Mark Narmore)
I didn't write this one, but when I heard it I immediately felt attached to it unlike any other song I'd ever heard. There are very few songs I didn't write where I have this kind of emotional attachment, but this one really talks about the things that are important to me.
?Lotta Man (In That Little Boy)?
(Craig Morgan, Phil O?Donnell, Tim Owens)
This is a true story about my son. I had a yellow Labrador retriever, a trained competition dog. He went out one morning, and as he was coming across the street he got hit. My son went out to get the dog. Kyle was just ten years old and crying because he loved that dog. Our neighbor Ron came out and said, ?Don't worry, Kyle. We'll take care of him.? But my son went back to the house, got on the four-wheeler with a shovel, went back, and said, ?This is my daddy's dog. He would want me to take care of it.? When I told my co-writer Phil O'Donnell about this, he said, ?There's a lot of man in that little boy.? That's where this song began.
?I'm Country?
(Craig Morgan, Galen Griffin, Phil O?Donnell)
I wrote this with Phil O'Donnell and Galen Griffin. You know, people always identify you as a redneck, a cowboy, a hillbilly, or whatever. I love this song because it says, ?That's not what I am. I'm just a country boy.? Sure, the lyric says, ?My neck is painted red by the grace of God.? But there's a difference between having a red neck and being a redneck [laughs].
?If You Like That?
(Craig Morgan, Phil O?Donnell, Kerry Kurt Phillips)
This one I wrote with Phil O?Donnell and Kerry Kurt Phillips. Kerry Kurt Phillips wrote ?Almost Home? with me. The message of ?If You Like That? is that a woman can still love a guy even when he screws things up. It was like that with my wife and me from our first date. We'd gone to this place called The Grasshopper, in Dickson, Tennessee. I was stationed at Fort Campbell, and right after that night I was shipped out on an operation for three weeks -- couldn't call her or nothin'. She thought I wasn't calling because I hadn't liked her, so when I got back I didn't even call -- I went straight from the field, with my camo still on, to her house and told her I was sorry. We've been together since then.
?Redneck Yacht Club?
(Thom Shepherd, Steve Williams)
Okay, there's that word "redneck" -- but I didn't write this song [laughs]. I love it, though, because it describes everybody I know. I like boats, although I'm not a big boat guy, and I like to fish, although that's not exactly a passion of mine. But when I heard this song I thought about all my friends who do boat, and this song is absolutely about them.
?Rain for the Roses?
(Craig Morgan, Shane Minor, Phil O?Donnell)
My dad's dad was a farmer. He loved the rain, except when he had to mow, cut, or harvest. When that happened he'd have to stop, get off the combine, and come in -- and that always made Grandmother happy [laughs]. I relate it to my life, too. I love to get up early in the morning, go off into the woods, and hunt. But when it's pouring down rain, I almost thank God because that means I get to stay in bed for a while longer, too. The point is that God knows what it takes to help love grow -- and sometimes all it takes is a little rain.
