When you are looking into buying a game camera, find out about these important, must-have features: date/time function, resolution, Passive Infrared (PIR) width and range, trigger time, memory, and flash.

Game Cameras are often used by hunters who want to scout their hunting areas at all times without actually being there. Animals passing by are easily recorded because of the infrared heat-and-motion detector that shoots an image of the animal and records other important information. Before you buy a game camera, consider these features carefully:

Date/Time function

As a hunter, knowing the date and time when animals visit your hunting spot is the most important information you want to know about your targets. In order to have this information, you will need a game camera that has this feature. Other cameras can also record temperature, moon phase and other types of information that could be helpful for you to know. Among all these features, the Date/Time function is the most common and important one that will be helpful to you.

Resolution

The resolution feature refers to the size of the digital image measured in megapixels (mpeg). Game cameras with higher mpegs are better, especially when its internal optics have the same quality. A resolution of 4 to 5 mpegs is pretty decent for hunting photos. You always have the choice of buying higher end resolutions if you want to have very high quality hunting photography.

Passive Infrared Width and Range

Passive Infrared (PIR) width and range is the camera's sensor mechanism. The wider range the PIR has, the better it will accurately capture faster mobility of passing animals. PIR width and range commonly starts at 10 degrees. A 180 degree range variety is also available for better sensor advantage.

Trigger time

The trigger time feature will help you select a perfect image. It provides more shots and a faster trigger that increases the number of the animal's moving images in its memory.

Memory

Almost all game cameras, like other types of cameras, have a memory card or stick that stores electronic images. These memory storage gadgets can be a SD card or a Compact Flash media card. Compact flash cards are more expensive than SD cards and have the same functionality. SD cards work well also. Just make sure that your memory cards are compatible with the game camera that you are using.

Flash

Game cameras use two types of flashes. They are incandescent and infrared (IR). An incandescent flash is highly rated compared to an IR flash. IR flashes, on the other hand, use less battery power and fire much quicker than an incandescent flash. It is an advantage to use game cameras that can quickly adjust from IR to incandescent flash and vice versa. High range flashes are also ideal for a better capture quality.

Using a game camera to help with your hunting activities will make your experiences more stimulating and successful. It is a helpful tool that will greatly add to your chances finding and catching your target.
