The 1939 classic comedy, "The Women," is getting the remake treatment. "The Women" was based on a play by Clare Booth Luce, with acclaimed director George Cukor the guiding force behind the film. The original starred Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland, and Joan Fontaine. New Line Cinema's updated version may boast an equally impressive cast as Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan, and Annette Bening are in negotiations to star in the film.

Uma Thurman may also be involved in the new "The Women."

Screenwriter Diane English will be making her directorial debut with "The Women." Mick Jagger, Victoria Pearman (who is responsible for getting New Line interested in the movie), and Christopher Eberts will produce the film, which is tentatively scheduled to begin shooting in February.

English told Variety, "The original was funny but very mean-spirited. It was Luce's attack on her gender. The catalyst of the story is still one of the women discovering her husband is having an affair, and the reaction of her friends. Unless I screw it up, there's a built-in audience for this movie."
