Type B Are Outdoors People

Would you rather be: 1(a) in your car traveling the highway to work at 32 mph even though the speed limit is 70 mph, or 1(b) traveling at half a mile per hour down a trail looking for birds? 2(a) helping build corporate culture through yet another meeting on the job, or 2(b) helping build an observation and photography blind at your local wetland? 3(a) staring at your computer screen analyzing a spreadsheet of last month's departmental performance, or 3(b) staring through your binoculars while acquiring warbler neck? If you answered (b) to all three of these questions, then we have something in common.
We share a keen affinity for the outdoors.
Having said so, then I believe we have a responsibility to be ardent advocate for it and erstwhile encouragers of others to become aware of and celebratory of the outdoors.
How does one do that? Drawing on my own experience, as a young boy, my mother often would load my brother, sister and me to go pick apples, or peaches, whatever was in season.
Or she would take us to the local park for a picnic.
My family often took cross country trips in the car on vacation specifically to explore some aspect of the outdoors.
We visited places like the Cumberland Gap, the Grand Canyon, and The Petrified Forest.
So, it is our turn to foster this love of the outdoors in our children with similar experiences.
Day trips, overnight trips, even vacation trips should be apart of our plan.
Another way is to join a group of society which regularly gets outdoors.
There are Audubon Chapters everywhere.
Some communities have Outing Clubs.
Also, encourage your friends and neighbors to join.
Explore and employ every available technique and avenue to expand the membership and participate in the planned activities.
Equip yourself with the tools to enjoy the outing.
One doesn't go fishing without bait and a fishing pole.
One doesn't go hiking without a good pair of hiking boots.
One doesn't go birding without a good pair of binoculars.
Be sure to have some equipment to share with your kids or friends who accompany you on the adventure.
In the long haul, we all would be better off answering (b) to all the questions.
