How to Boot a MacBook From an External USB Drive

1Connect the USB flash drive to your computer, then Insert the OS X installation disk into the drive of your Macbook.

Select "System Preferences," the select "Start Up Disks" and finally "Restart into the OS X DVD." The Macbook is now going to restart. When the computer restarts it is going to boot from the OS X installation disk.

Follow the installation prompts until you reach the installation volume and select "Utility," then "Disk Utility."

Click the USB flash drive, then click "Options." This opens a new pop-up window. From the window select "GUID Partition Table." Click "Apply" and follow the remaining prompts to complete the OS X installation on the flash drive.

Select "System Preferences" (the icon on the dock that resembles clock gears). Click "Start up Disks," then choose the USB flash drive you have connected. When the computer restarts it is going to boot from the external USB drive.
