How to Make a Coptic Tunic
- 1). Measure the length of your body from shoulder to knee; get your assistant's help. Stretch your arms out, and have your assistant measure you from wrist to wrist and across the chest.
- 2). Fold the fabric in half. Draw a rectangle matching these dimensions onto the cloth, with one short edge lining up with the folded edge of the fabric. Then, draw a smaller rectangle inside the larger rectangle, as wide as your chest measurement plus an additional inch.
- 3). Measure 10 inches down from the folded edge of the rectangle. Draw a horizontal line across the width of the larger rectangle. This will make the sleeve outline for the Coptic tunic.
- 4). Cut out the tunic along the outline. Cut a 14-inch horizontal slit in the middle of the folded line to make the head opening.
- 5). Open the tunic and spread it out flat. Pin trim pieces in a vertical line down the front and back of the tunic, across the shoulders. Sew the trim pieces in place, removing the pins as you go.
- 6). Turn the fabric wrong-side-out and refold it. Hem the bottom of the sleeves and sides of the tunic, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- 7). Try on the tunic. Check the width of the sleeves. The tunic sleeves should feel fitted throughout the length of your arm. If the sleeves are too loose, pin the sleeves to the correct tightness and resew the bottom edge.
- 8). Sew a 1/4-inch hem into the bottom of the tunic, the sleeves and the neck. Turn the tunic right side out.
- 9). Sew trim pieces around the neckline and sleeve hems if desired.
