Impaired Driving Dangers

103 36
The ever increasing reach of businesses and the sprawl of cities out to the suburbs and exurbs have made it so that is difficult for most people to avoid spending an inordinate amount of time in an automobile.
Getting to and from work, social events, the grocery store, medical appointments, and the other countless array of things that fill one's day has become an integral and accepted part of modern life.
Whether traveling as the driver or as a passenger a person is in some measure at the mercy of the other motorists on the highway, and when those individuals choose to operate a vehicle while impaired, the consequences can be devastating.
All car accidents come with at least some risk of physical injury and property damage, even when traveling at low speeds at the time of impact.
Accidents that are caused by impaired drivers are especially dangerous because those persons are incapable of taking the normal evasive maneuvers that would normally serve to mitigate the severity of an accident.
This tends to be most strongly represented in higher velocities at the moment of collision and in a greater propensity for head-on collisions, both of which are likely to result in more severe injuries than would have been incurred if the other driver had been fit to operate a car.
Common Driving Impairments There has been much attention paid in news reports and public service campaigns to the problems of drunk driving over the course of recent decades.
This has been a successful effort in terms of spreading information about the issue, but there are still an astonishing number of motorists who choose to endanger their own safety and that of others by driving under the influence of alcohol, in spite of harsh public condemnation and stiff criminal penalties for a conviction on related charges.
But often in the discussion of impaired driving, there are other forms of impairment that are overlooked although they still pose a very real hazard for everyone on the road.
Additional contributing factors to driver impairment may include:
  • Drowsiness due to inadequate sleep
  • Cough, cold, and flu medications
  • Some antidepressants
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Marijuana, cocaine, and other illicit drug usage
Complicated Resolutions If you have been injured in an accident caused by an impaired driver then you may be able to pursue a civil lawsuit to recover financial compensation beyond that available under an insurance policy.
