How to Make a Drum With Canvas
- 1). Measure the opening of a cylindrical plastic bucket with a tape measure. For example, the opening has a diameter of 12 inches.
- 2). Cut a wooden embroidery hoop to a diameter of 12 inches with a handsaw. Position the embroidery hoop on the outside of the opening with superglue.
- 3). Add 1 inch to the measured diameter in Step 1, then cut a piece of canvas into a circle this size with fabric shears. In this example, the canvas has a diameter of 13 inches.
- 4). Pour water into a container and soak the canvas in the water. The water tightens the canvas fabric.
- 5). Position the canvas over the opening. Leave a 1-inch border around the edges of the opening.
- 6). Staple the canvas to the embroidery hoop. After stapling half of the canvas, pull the canvas tight and staple the rest of the canvas to the embroidery hoop. Let the canvas dry for 10 hours.
- 7). Wrap duct tape around the edges of the canvas and bucket. The duct tape keeps the canvas tight and covers the loose ends of the canvas.
- 8). Drill a 2-inch hole in the center of the bottom of the bucket with a power drill and 2-inch drill bit. The hole amplifies the sound.
