Laser Cataract Surgery, Ready For Prime Time?

103 17
Laser cataract surgery is a step closer to patients with FDA approval.
From a preliminary review of the available technology, it seems that the new laser procedure, for skilled surgeons, will offer little except perhaps a more round opening into the lens.
It is thought that the size and shape of this opening will make lens power calculations more precise.
The wounds and astigmatism correction may be more precise and reproducible as well.
This, however remains to be proven.
Although the laser is designed to break up the lens, the surgeon will still need to use ultrasound and the laser will introduce additional energy into the eye.
Time will be the ultimate judge of how the cost/benefit scale tips.
With the costs approaching a half a million dollars, and additional fees associated with every surgery the benefits need to be clearly visible to the surgeon and patient.
Financing models are being developed to transfer the cost to the patients.
If widespread adoption ensues, then the technology will have perceived or demonstrated value if not it will be an expensive and quite large paperweight.
The industry cannot hit all home runs and we need not look too far in the past to see the first generation laser phaco devices fail to get traction.
Laser thermal keratoplasty died as well.
The earlier excimer lasers have pretty much died as well (Ladarvision and Summit).
These were expensive mistakes for those that followed these innovations to their graves.
Hopefully, this new generation of lasers will be safer, faster and produce better outcomes.
