The Best Way to Cut a Marble Counter Top
- 1). Mark the desired measurement on the marble countertop. Scribe a cut line in the surface, using an awl or utility knife against a framing square or other straightedge. Score the line several times to make it distinguishable during the cutting.
- 2). Cover the base of the circular saw table with a solid layer of masking or duct tape to help prevent scratching the marble's surface during the cutting.
- 3). Clamp a wood straightedge to the countertop to use as a saw guide during cutting. Offset the wood guide from the cut line by the distance between the edge of the circular saw's table and blade, to insure the guide holds the blade in alignment with the desired cutting line.
- 4). Cut the marble countertop along the cut line scored in Step 1 using a circular saw mounted with a carborundum blade, moving slowly and smoothly to minimize blade wobble. Support the waste piece of marble to prevent the marble from breaking toward the end of the cut.
- 5). Sand the cut edge of the marble countertop using a pad sander mounted with a medium sandpaper, progressing to a fine sandpaper. Sand the cut edge until it's smooth and free of saw marks.
