Positive Socialization

• Positive socialization teaches individuals which behaviors are socially acceptable because they are rewarded when they display good behavior. For example, parents buy their child a candy bar or a new toy when he cleans his room without being asked.
  
  

Negative Socialization

• Negative socialization teaches a person which behaviors aren't socially acceptable through negative feedback. For example, if children poke fun at another child's outfit at school, he might not wear that outfit again.
  
  

Modeling

• Modeling is a method of socialization in which a person learns acceptable behavior by observing someone she admires. For example, after a girl sees her sister styling her hair a certain way, she may style her hair the same way.
  
  

Selective Exposure

• Selective exposure is a method that teaches socialization by controlling what a person is exposed to. While he is exposed to desirable behaviors, he is also sheltered from unacceptable ones. For example, a parent may forbid his child from watching shows on television that have inappropriate language on them.
  
  

Identification

• Identification is similar to modeling, only more extreme. Instead of just imitating another person's behavior, the person identifies with the other person. They imagine themselves being just like another person. For example, a little boy wants to be just like his favorite football player when he grows up.
  
  

Nurturance

• Nurturance is similar to positive and negative feedback, but the feedback comes from a person the subject looks up to. For example, if a child looks up to her aunt, she may be more motivated to continue getting good grades if her aunt praises her for her good report card.
