How Can I Dress Up an Outside Garage Wall?

    Garage Door

    • For garage doors that face out onto the street, a simple coat of paint can go a long way in improving their appearance. Make your garage door less noticeable by painting it a shade similar to that of the cladding of your home, such as brown to blend with brick or light beige to match siding. To make more of a statement, paint it to match the trim of your home or your shutters and front door. Choose crisp white or a more standout color like burgundy or green.

If you have more money to spend, consider replacing your garage door with one that incorporates a glass design at the top or that is divided by decorative panels. Choose a style that matches the rest of your home so that your garage doesn't steal the show.

    Blank Wall

    • The side walls of garages are typically blank from the exterior, void of windows or other articulation. To break up the monotony, you can install false shutters to match the other shutters on your home. They will give the illusion that there are windows behind, while maintaining the rhythm of the facade. Add window boxes filled with flowers for a finishing touch.

Plant landscaping, including small trees or bushes, to cover part of this blank surface and add depth. To camouflage the wall, plant climbing vines or install a trellis on the wall if you are concerned that the vines will damage your home's exterior. Another option is to install decorative lighting such as wall sconces, which add detail during the day and wash the wall with light at night.

    Get Creative

    • If the traditional approaches to dressing up outside garage walls leave something to be desired, or you want to have a little fun with the garage wall that faces onto your backyard, consider this blank wall a canvas waiting to be filled with art.

Stucco exteriors are ideal surfaces upon which to paint a mural. Install niches within the wall to create depth or to hold sculptures. Hang a series of mirrors to reflect the lush garden that you've planted in front of your wall, and add a bench as a place for reflection.
