Ford 2.3-Liter Performance
- The Ford 2.3-liter engine, known as the Duratec 23, has a bore (cylinder diameter) of 87.5 mm and a stroke (piston traveling distance) of 94 mm. It has an aluminum engine block with cast-in iron cylinder liners. A fuel-injected engine, it has a four valves per cylinder.
- Ford uses the Duratec 23 in both its Focus and Fusion lines, as well as in its Ranger lineup of light trucks and its Escape light sport utility vehicle (SUV). The engine also came in Mazda clones of the Ranger and Escape.
- Ford also uses the Duratec 23 in its hybrid vehicles. It modified the engine to attain greater efficiency by employing a system whereby intake, compression, power and exhaust strokes occur in one turn of the crankshaft. This extra efficiency makes hybridization with a battery system effective and more fuel efficient.
