How to Install Heated Motorcycle Grips

    • 1). Slide off the grips over your handlebars. Use a compressed air hose to help ease off the grips if they are too difficult to remove by hand.

    • 2). Peel off the protective backing on the heating grips and carefully wrap them around the handlebars. The side of the grip where the wires are coming out should be on the inner side of the handlebar, with the wires pointing toward the center of the motorcycle.

    • 3). Wrap the wires hanging out of the grips once around the handlebars. Place a piece of electrical tape on them to hold them in place. The tape will keep the wires from being jostled at the leads and causing shorts.

    • 4). Pass the wires along the bars of the motorcycle until they meet at the point where you want to place the switch.

    • 5). Twist together the ends of the wires so that each color is matched with its mate. There are three of each color on each side. Connect the wires that are the same color.

    • 6). Solder one red wire to the terminal on a mini center-off toggle switch with a soldering iron. The center post of the terminal will be positive, so solder the red wire to this post.

    • 7). Solder two more wires to the right and left of the positive wire. Use the same colors as your grips have. For example, if your grips have blue, white and red wires, use these colors to solder onto the switch. Apply liquid tape to the soldered wire to seal them up against the weather.

    • 8). Connect the red wires of the grips to the central red wire of the switch. Do the same with the remaining wires so all the colors are matched up and the switch is connected to the grips.

    • 9). Slide shrink tubing over each of the wire connections between the grips and switch. Shrink the tubes with a heat gun until they are tightly secure around the connections.

Set the switch where you want to mount it. Attach it using a power drill and screws.
