A prescription is only written for those patients who require lenses.
This recommendation is then used to make a pair of prescription lenses for the patient.
These lenses which are designed to correct your personal vision defects are prescription lenses.
A prescription states the parameters of the lens; what exactly is required in a lens, to correct the patient's eyesight.
The condition of both eyes is also included, focusing on points such as refractive errors and the strength of distance vision and near vision.
It is also important to include the physical structure of the eyes, and the eyes in relation to the face.
A prescription includes measurements such as the distance between a patients pupils and the distance between the patient's cornea and the lens.
The prescription is written in note form on a chart.
The use of optical terms means it is difficult for most patients to read and understand.
Some of the abbreviations are listed below.
OD stands - oculus dexter (right eye) OS - oculus sinister (left eye) SPH - sphere (horizontal curve of the eye, which determines what strength of lens is needed) CYL - cylinder lists (vertical curve of the eye lens) PRISM - (a measurement used more commonly in complicated prescriptions) ADD - (a measurement used for bifocal lens prescriptions.
It states strength of power required to correct a vision defect) All the above information is discovered by the optometrist using practical and experimental means, and is essential in creating a precise prescription lens.
