A car window requires a number of components that make it useful in the vehicle. Car windows protect the driver and passengers from wind and debris while driving. They also provide an unobstructed view of the road. Some of the car window components keep the glass securely in place; others add functionality to the window by wiping away rain or allowing the glass panes to be lowered for fresh air or raised when it is cold outside. - A car typically has a windshield, a rear window and side windows on both sides of the vehicle. The glass panes vary considerably in size and shape, depending on the design of the vehicle.
- A wiper motor and rubber blade assembly is typically found on the car windshield. One wiper is installed on each side of the windshield. Wiper blades can vary from about 16 to 22 inches in length. Some cars come equipped with a similar wiper assembly on the rear window.
- Car window frames are usually fashioned out of aluminum or chrome-coated steel and consist of a slot or track. The glass is inserted into this channel when the window is installed at the factory or replaced when the glass is broken. This channel keeps the glass firmly in place.
- The window glass is supported by a metal or plastic clip that is attached behind the weatherproofing cover on the door panel. This clip keeps the glass aligned and in position. The window is also supported by a series of concealed brackets inside the door panel.
- Some car windows are operated electronically and pressing a button moves the glass up or down. Other cars come with a manual handle that is rotated one way or the other. Electronic window components include electronic circuitry and a mechanized assembly that raises and lowers the glass, while the manual handle uses a simple lever and gear system to accomplish the task.
