LeBron James & the Social Media Marketing Hype of the Century
Today's the eve of the most hyped free agent signing in sports history as LeBron James is set to announce the team he will be accepting millions to play for at 9pm EST.
This is totally unprecedented media coverage for anything as ridiculous as simply signing a contract.
And you can thank his team of advisors and a huge ego for it...
While I think this is a silly display (and I'm a big sports fan), there are plenty of marketing lessons that can be learned from this.
The first and most important is that a good marketer can make something enormously profitable out of absolutely nothing.
Think about it - these guys managed to get an hour long special out of ESPN for free and they are selling sponsorships of the special.
All to just announce who LeBron is going to play for! At least in this case they are planning on donating all the proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Secondly, they used social media to push their promotion and hype behind LeBron's signing.
As I'm typing this post, I'm looking at the trending topics on Yahoo.
"LeBron Twitter" is #8, so out of the most searched things on all of Yahoo, people are looking for his Twitter account for updates! The term "LeBron James" is #3.
It's being said that he will be answering questions from Twitter during the ESPN special tonight.
The Twitter account that was set up specifically for this has gotten over 200,000 followers in 24 hours.
This just goes to show how many people are relying on this form of communication and how quickly things can be spread across these platforms.
There are ways to piggy back on this kind of traffic with your marketing as I am doing right now! Lastly, LeBron has a team of people putting these strategies into place.
LeBron is the owner of his business.
He has certain skills that allowed for the business to be in existence.
As a smart business owner, he focuses entirely on those skills and surrounds himself with people who can do everything else.
No business has ever achieved greatness from the founder doing all the work by him/herself...
I challenge you to show me an example that proves me wrong! So many business owners try to take on the task of their social media marketing by themselves because they don't have an understanding of what it really takes to be successful at it...
That's why having a team of people around you that know how to get you to where you want to be with your marketing is priceless.
