How to Learn ACLS
- 1). Research each of the ACLS training selections on the AHA website and sign up for a classroom choice or access your eLearning selection online. These training courses are for healthcare providers requiring an ACLS provider card for the first time, sequential recertification or renewal after a deactivation period.
- 2). Select ACLS Experienced Provider Course as a renewal for advanced healthcare providers and clinicians that require special interventions in certain types of medical emergency scenarios. The 10-hour classroom-based course teaches standardized ACLS competency skills and practical field knowledge. The content includes a deeper knowledge of cardiac support response, toxicology and metabolic emergencies, drowning and other special life-saving emergencies. Students will need an ACLS reference manual and must pass the written and skills tests.
- 3). Access the HeartCodeTM ACLS course in three parts that integrates skills and web-based training. Part one is the 6 hour online class and exam; the content includes virtual-scenarios for patient treatment, BLS evaluation and response, medications for emergencies and cardiac resuscitation. Unlimited 2 year access of a downloadable ACLS manual, drugs reference guide and AHA CPR guidelines are included. Part two consists of skills practice at a training center with a manikin. Part three---at a training center---consists of the skills test on a voice-assisted manikin with a certified ACLS instructor present. The on-site skills practice and training time ranges from 20 to 60 minutes.
- 4). Attend a 13.5 hour classroom-based ACLS training course with an ACLS instructor, video and hands-on skills practice and testing. The content includes basic life support, heart rhythm recognition, airway management, cardio-version, medications, IV placement, life-threatening condition recognition, cardiac ischemia treatment and team resuscitation dynamics. Required student materials include the ACLS provider manual and CD, also a pre-course checklist and pocket reference card set. Students must pass a final written exam and skills test.
- 5). Complete the ACLS testing requirements to receive the certification American Heart Association ACLS Provider Course Completion Card valid for 2 years.
