The state of Louisiana has a lot of golf courses, many of which are little-known public treasures. Louisiana golfing is growing in popularity, as many public courses are being added to the nationally recognized Audobon Golf Trail. Spread throughout the state´s varied geography of wetlands, marshes, hardwood forests and bayous, many of these courses are well-groomed, championship playgrounds. With multiple tee settings, the courses are fit for professionals and beginners alike. - For a public golf course near New Orleans, check out the Atchafalaya Golf Course at Idlewilde. Located in the Atchafalaya Basin, the course is surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty, including more than 40 distinct plant species. It is unobstructed by the presence of any nearby residential or commercial complexes, giving it a pleasant, secluded feel. The 7,533-yard championship course comprises 18-holes, filled with finely groomed fairways and expansive greens, as well as some large water hazards and a number of formidable bunkers. The newly constructed clubhouse is positioned in the middle of the course, and sits upon an elevated plain for excellent views of the surrounding basin as well as a panoramic view of the golf course. There are five sets of tees, pro-line rental clubs, a complete practice facility as well as a restaurant in the club house.

The surrounding lake and hardwood forests create the natural scenery of Cypress Bend. The main features of this championship-level course are the Toledo Bend inlets that serve as water hazards; 10 holes are along the water, while six present shots across the water. Hole 9, for example, is a formidable par 5, dog-legging almost 90 degrees with a narrow fairway bridging a large inlet and an elevated green. The course has a clubhouse with a cafe for breakfast as well as snack and grill fare throughout the day.
