103 10
Wondering how to improve your speed to become a better soccer player? This article will give you the down and dirty tips to getting faster.
But first, if you really want to learn how to improve your speed, you need to commit yourself to a training program.
Increasing your speed is one of the hardest training goals to accomplish.
It takes a lot of work to see little results, but those little results have a huge impact on your game.
I like to look at improving your speed as a step-by-step process.
If you're able to follow these simple steps, you can become faster.
The first step is to learn how to run efficiently.
When I began to looking into improving my speed, I started to practice running on a mirror in front of a treadmill.
I was soon amazed how much wasted effort I had.
I noticed my head bobbing, my arms had no consistent motion, and I was heavily favoring my right sight because of a past ankle injury.
A few times running in front of a tread mill I was able to work out all the wasted motion.
I was now using much less energy to run even faster.
The best tip I have, is get a friend to stand on the side of the treadmill and put his hand one inch above your head.
While you're running, make sure your head is not hitting your friends hand.
Besides keeping your head moving from side to side and up and down, make sure your arms swing fluidly.
It feels best when my arms are at a 90 degree angle and my hands are gently closed.
A great tip I use is to pretend you're holding two small animals, like a bird, between your hands.
You want to close your hands but not to tight.
Any energy used to strengthen your hands, takes away from energy used to increase foot speed.
Next, pay attention to where you're feet are landing.
The best sprinters in the world, run with on their toes.
If you can look in the mirror, make sure you're not letting your heels touch the ground.
The more time your feet are on the ground, the less time you have to move forward.
Therefore, the last step is to attempt to minimize the time your feet are on the ground.
While running, time yourself how many times your feet touch while sprinting for 30 seconds.
Repeat this drill at least once a day, attempting to increase the number of steps you take.
Last, watch the best in the world run fast.
It's amazing how much you can learn from the best.
They have the best fundamentals in the world.
Learn from them!
