Control Problems With the DiRT PC Game

    Direct X

    • Microsoft's DirectX graphics applications are the backbone of DiRT. You can verify what build is installed in your system by typing "dxdiag" in the "Run ..." box in the Windows Start menu. You should have a build of 9.0c or later if using Windows XP. Windows Vista can utilize any version of DirectX 10, though later versions will help smooth issues related to the program. Always keep your DirectX drivers up to date--outdated versions can cause problems with many aspects of your game including control and tracking.

    Display Resolution

    • Display resolutions can have an impact on driving performance, as your game may not recognize the cursor position correctly with some settings. Windows Vista includes a desktop-enhancement program called Aero that should be disabled when playing full-screen racing sims. Set your game and the monitor's resolution to the default settings to troubleshoot graphics problems with DiRT. These will be listed either on the back of the monitor or on the manufacturer's website. You can then adjust the resolution to fit your personal needs and preferences.

    Keyboard and Mouse Drivers

    • Outdated keyboard or mouse drivers can affect control settings. Many specialized multimedia keyboards or wireless combos require regular driver updates from the manufacturer to prevent tracking and input errors. You can get these drivers from a driver library directory such as NoDevice.com or the manufacturer's website. Also, ensure that your input devices are not damaged or dirty. Dust or hair caught in the optical sensors of mice will trick the sensors and ruin your tracking stability. Blow out your keyboard regularly with canned air to ensure that keys are not sticking. This can happen even when the keys appear to have returned to neutral positions.
