There are a number of careers that provide the opportunity to protect and serve the United States, and working in homeland security is one of them. A career in the field can lead to jobs in customs, border protection, immigration, and transportation security. Training is available for individuals interested in working in homeland security, typically at the graduate level. Several schools in California offer programs related to homeland security. - San Diego State University is a large public four-year institution in Southern California. The university offers a graduate program in homeland security known as the HSEC Program. The 36-unit curriculum includes four core courses to be taken by all students, plus eight specialization tracks. Specializations include terrorism and irregular warfare, border security and governance, and information security. The core and specialization courses total 24 units of the program, and the remaining units are electives. Students must maintain a B average in the program and earn no less than a C in any course to graduate.

sdsu.edu - The Naval Postgraduate School is a graduate school in Monterey, California, offering higher education to military and civilian students. The Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School awards a master's degree in homeland security that can be completed in 18 months. Classes include comparative government for homeland security and technology for homeland security. Most coursework is completed online, but students are required to be on campus for two weeks every quarter, or 12 weeks total. Applicants should have homeland security experience and a degree from an accredited university.

The university offers a master of science in homeland security and safety engineering that can be completed at one of seven campuses or online. The 54-unit program consists of 12 courses, including fundamentals of security, managing information security, and planning for terrorism. Students may transfer up to 13.5 credits of relevant study from another institution into the program. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to successfully pass the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification exams.
