Keeping Your Nursery Safe: 6 Recalled Children"s Products to Fix or Toss
The moms on Circle of Moms come to talk about all sorts of parenting advice and issues - including children's product recalls. It's easy to feel disconcerted after learning that a children's product you own and trust has been recalled, but discussing questions or worries with other moms can help ease your mind, and find great alternatives.
Important Recent Recalls
We know the safety of your little ones is a number-one priority, but we also realize it's not easy to stay on top of the latest news when you can barely find time to shower! To help make your life a little easier, we've rounded up a shortlist of important recent recalls.
Children's Medicine Recalls
* Hylands Teething Tablets. Hylands Teething Tablets were voluntarily recalled by Standard Homeopathic Company. The FDA found that Hyland's Teething Tablets contain inconsistent amounts of belladonna, and also that the lack of a child-proofed lid could cause a hazard. In Circle of Moms conversations, many moms expressed their hope that Hylands will return. Says Kimi B., "I hope the company can get this fixed and add a child-proofed lid. These tablets are great."
Children's Toy Recalls
* Various Fisher Price toys. Fisher Price has recalled several lines of toys, including trikes, highchairs, rampways, and infant toys with inflatable balls. If you own any Fisher Price toys, check the Fisher Price site for a list of recalled products, as well as Mattel's recall customer service page for additional information on each specific recall.
* Munchkin Submarine Bath Toy. A battery-operated submarine bath toy by Munchkin was recalled because the intake valve poses a laceration threat. Munchkin will replace recalled toys with alternative toys; call (877) 242-3134 or visit http://www.munchkin.com. For mom-approved bath toy ideas, check out Circle of Moms conversations on bath time.
* Rocking Horse Depot Toys. The Rocking Horse Depot issued a voluntary recall of rocking horse toys due to a risk of strangulation--the reins on the horse bridals are long enough for a child's head to slip under. If you own this toy, you can cut the reins to remove the risk.
Baby Gear Recalls
* Ethan Allen Drop-Side Cribs. Ethan Allen recalled drop-side cribs because of a faulty drop-side rail that creates a hazard for falling and entrapment. The entrapment risk also poses a risk for strangulation or suffocation. If you have one of the cribs, contact Ethan Allen for a repair kit by calling toll-free (888) 339-9398 or visiting http://www.ethanallen.com.
* Britax Infant Car Seats. Over 17,000 Britax infant car seats manufactured between April 2009-May 2010 have been recalled (models include E9L69N9 Moonstone, E9L69P2 Red Mill, E9L69P3 Savannah, and E9L69P5 Cowmooflage). An incorrectly produced chest clip can break, posing a risk of cutting the skin; small broken pieces would also be a choking hazard. If you have one of these seats, contact Britax for a replacement chest clip by calling (888) 427-4829 or visiting http://www.britax.com.
