How to Grow Sweeter Strawberries
- 1). Plant strawberries in full sun to part shade 18 to 20 inches apart. Choose a spot with moist, well-drained soil.
- 2). Side dress the strawberries with an inch of compost at planting time and every future spring to provide nutrition. Be careful, too much compost grows bigger berries, but the trade off is a much blander tasting berry. For sweeter strawberries do not over fertilize the plants.
- 3). Mulch strawberries with straw to retain moisture and keep the berries off the ground.
- 4). Use a floating row cover to keep the birds away from the ripening fruit. Buy the row cover at the nursery.
